A SMALL PARADISE IN THE MED……..

We have been there , we have enjoyed it a lot , we know what we’re talking about…………

we are talking about that wonderful bit of paradise , that teeny-weeny-tiny GREEK ISLAND called SYROS , where the main problem seems to be………….. on which beach are we going to lay today ………..???

Served by speedy ferry-boats a few times a day , leaving from the mainland ( port of PIRAEUS / ATHENS ) ) at a minimal cost ( around € 30 / person ), the sea voyage takes a little less than 4 hours and you just wish the trip would take a bit longer viewing the magnificent seascape scenery in front of your eyes : one gorgeous island after another , the normaly relaxed atmosphere on board , the holiday spirit surrounding you……..

SYROS is the type of island where you go on vacation basically for three reasons : to rest and relax in a friendly and ecological environment , to have great greek food and to enjoy probably the very best greek beaches all over the MEDITERRANEAN SEA ! I mean , you just don’t drop there to have a fantastic and crazy night life like you would in MYKONOS , SANTORINI or even RHODES ; really , if you’re looking for noisy night life then SYROS is not your place to go ! On the other hand , if you wish to have a relaxed and problem-free vacation , then SYROS is your place !

We were very fortunate to have met many years ago such good friends as GEORGE and his beautiful wife APHRODITIS , who let us use their incredible well located villa on the top of one of the hills in the island , facing the sea , with an almost 360º sea view ; with a lovely patio and very confortable chairs , you just sit there , endless hours , admiring the sea , watching all the huge cruise ships passing by as well as the fishermen’s small boats coming from a hard day’s work , at the end of the afternoon , with the sun hiding away at the horizon ……….and , of course , sipping a glass of a wonderful greek white wine !

Next day it will be another ”boring day” at one of the so many available beaches , some of them no more than a ”miserable” 2 kms away from the villa although your choice is rather extensive ; the most important beaches are : AZOLIMOS , VARI (our favorite…) , ACHLADI , MEGAS GIALOS , AGHATOPES , FINIKAS , KOKKINA , GALISSAS , KINI , DELFINI , VARVAROUSSA , LIA , GHLISOURA – – – – – – – – – so , for a small island , not bad at all ,  right ???

Then , if it’s time and ocasion for a nice dinner out in town , no sweat ! The small but picturesque capital city ( HERMOPOLIS ) is only 4 km away from our friends villa , easily reached by bus, bike and of course , by car ; there is plenty to see in town , not only the sophisticated water-front with its nice MARINA , but a couple of beautiful and old monasteries , well iluminated at night…; also plenty of shops open at night , nice squares full of locals enjoyng their snacks or ice-creams , etc ; do you just feel like watching people ??? that’s the place to be : plenty of outside esplanades and terraces by the seafront , many with typical restaurants .

Due to the severe economical crisis in the country , GREECE nowadays is quite affordable for most people , actually now GREECE is  THE destination !

Our friends do a good business renting part of the villa , actually two independent and fully furnished apartments adjacent to the main house and , although the month of August is pratically impossible to rent ( it’s always booked one year in advance !!! ) , normally they have availability for the months of MAY , JUNE , JULY , and SEPTEMBER , by one week periods ; any interested person may contact them directly thru :  geosin@otenet.gr ; frankly speaking , it’s just one of those opportunities not to be missed at all…..; normally the good weather conditions prevailing during those months make the vacations much nicer and smoother than the busy and crowded month of August….

PLEASE TAKE A LOOK AT SOME PICTURES OF THIS AMAZING SMALL PARADISE…….

  1. I can’t believe that your description is so much accurate and attractive .
Even for someone like me who stays in Syros island for more than 20 years,it is amazing to read your way of feelings for the place.
Thank you very much for the nice words for us.
We’ll be realy happy to expect you and Marilia again and again in Syros…

    Hi!
As I can read you are ready for a long lasting trip throughout the american continent. I said before: I like your writings and that one from Greece is accurate, nice and lively. I’m sure your friend’s villa will never be underbooked; and your language skills shall make us eager and eager for more round-trip reports. May the endovelic gods be with you!
